Crumb Quilting Class Section 1 is zoom and Section 2 is instore

We’ve all sewn projects where we have “unusable” scraps of fabric left over.  These so-called unusable scraps are somewhere between too small and just not quite big enough.  Know what we call those?  …..  CRUMBS!

Don’t throw them away.  As long as the crumb is large enough to get at least two seam allowances out of it, it is good usable fabric.  So how do you use crumb scraps?  Join us to find out.  We will have a number of ways to use up those crumbs and create wonderful projects.

CRUMB EXCHANGE:  If you’re like most people (okay, if you’re like me) your crumb bin probably consists largely of the same fabrics which are cut-offs and trimmings from recent projects.  There may not be a large variety of fabrics, prints, or textures.  We can help you with that.   If you would like to participate in the Crumb Exchange, bring in a one-gallon zip-lock bag ONE WEEK BEFORE the class and leave it with us.  We will collect all of the crumbs, place them in a large bin, give them a good mixing up, and then refill and return a one-gallon zip-lock bag to you on class day. Or if you are attending online you can pick up your bag at the store or we can mail it to you.

The beauty of crumb quilting is the variety of fabrics, prints, and textures that you can put together in a myriad of ways.   In this class, we will talk about what a “crumb” is, how to identify it, how to use it, how to create new fabric using crumbs, and how to complete projects using crumby fabric.

Crumb Quilting Class:  What to bring with you to class.

  1.  Crumbs!  Yes, if you participated in the crumb exchange, you will be getting a one-gallon bag of crumbs returned to you.  However, you may wish to bring more crumbs to work with during class.  Who knows, you may even “trade” crumbs with others in the class to mutually grow the variety in your crumb stashes.

  2. Sewing machine.

  3. Quarter-inch piecing foot (preferably one with a guide).

  4. Thread

  5. Snips or small scissors

  6. Small pressing/cutting mat, rotary ruler, and rotary cutter.

  7. Small iron.

  8. A container to take home your “together crumbs”.

Class Projects:   Pick one of the following projects to work on during the class.

  1. Crumb Mug Rug.    If you would like to make a mug rug, in addition to the supplies above, you will also need to bring two six-inch squares of batting and one 9-inch square of backing fabric.

  1. Small Zipper Bag.    If you would like to make a small zipper bag, in addition to the supplies above, you will also need to bring a 9” – 12” zipper, one fat quarter for the lining, and a piece of soft-and-stable or in-r-foam suitably sized to fit the size of the bag (roughly 10” x 15”).

WARNING!!!!  Crumb quilting is highly addictive.  You may experience uncontrolled bouts of a sewing frenzy.  Crumb sewing may lead to a reduction in housework, sleep, and spousal care.
